Desire and sexual response
Bremelanotide activates several melanocortin receptors, including MC3R and MC4R. Its central action forms the basis of its study in disorders of sexual desire and response; the exact therapeutic mechanism remains incompletely defined.
Its clinical efficacy is established, for a specific drug formulation, in certain acquired and generalized disorders of sexual desire in premenopausal women. The data obtained with this formulation do not automatically validate this 10 mg vial.
In men, the erectile response is also being researched. The effects on sensitivity, sexual satisfaction, and anxiety remain insufficiently established to be presented as guaranteed benefits.
Response time and duration
The product information sheet indicates that the onset of response occurs around 2 hours, peaks between 3 and 4 hours, and lasts 8 to 10 hours. These estimates are not clinically validated timeframes for this bottle. Individual response depends on factors such as formulation, dosage, and usage context.
Dosage guidelines
The following values are from the original description. They are retained for informational purposes only and do not constitute a validated administration schedule for this product.
| Landmark described | Value indicated |
|---|---|
| Initial beach mentioned | 0.1 to 0.3 mg |
| Range of use mentioned | 0.5 to 1 mg |
| Weight-related reference point | 10 µg/kg |
| Time before the requested response | 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours |
The information leaflet also specifies a maximum dose of 1.5 mg and one administration per day. These limits do not guarantee the safety of daily use. The dosage and frequency require a medical evaluation specific to the formulation used.
Preparation and storage
The product comes in powder form and must be reconstituted. The information sheet mentions bacteriostatic water and refrigeration after preparation. The compatible diluent, its volume, temperature, and storage time must be confirmed in the manufacturer’s instructions.
The subcutaneous route is as described in the information sheet. The intramuscular and intranasal routes require their own safety data and should not be extrapolated from this injectable presentation.
Precautions and tolerance
Bremelanotide causes a transient increase in blood pressure. Uncontrolled hypertension or known cardiovascular disease is a contraindication to its use. Liver or kidney disease, cancer, or a history of allergies requires prior medical evaluation.
Side effects include nausea, hot flashes, headaches, and injection site reactions. Localized pigmentation of the skin or gums has also been reported and sometimes persists after discontinuation.
Use during pregnancy should be avoided. If breastfeeding, medical assessment should take into account the lack of data on infant exposure.
