Role of the curator
Benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth in the bottle. It facilitates successive withdrawals of small volumes; maintaining sterility also relies on disinfecting the stopper and using sterile equipment for each use.
Preparation
The compatibility of the diluent and the volume to use depend on the instructions for the medication to be reconstituted. The amount of water added determines its final concentration.
- Disinfect the stopper: clean the rubber stopper before each use and allow to dry.
- Withdraw the required volume: use a new, sterile needle and syringe.
- Transferring the diluent: introduce the specified volume into the vial of the medicine, according to its reconstitution instructions.
- Dissolving the powder: make gentle movements if the instructions specify, avoiding vigorous shaking.
- Storing the preparation: follow the conditions and duration of use specific to the reconstituted medicine.
Storage after opening
Store the bottle at room temperature, away from direct light, according to its labeling. Note the date of the first sample collection.
The usual guideline for a multidose vial is disposal within 28 days of the first injection, unless a different timeframe is specified by the manufacturer. The expiry date remains an absolute limit. This timeframe applies to the diluent; the expiry date for the reconstituted medication depends on its own package insert.
